MPL Environmental Policy

The Mackay Ports Limited owns and operates the sea and air ports of the regional Queensland centre of Mackay. The seaport is predominantly a bulk cargo port and is Queensland’s fourth busiest in terms of cargo throughput. The Mackay airport is regional Australia’s eighth busiest. That the airport and seaport are successful operations is essential to the sustainable development of the economic resources of local, regional and national communities.

In order to operate a successful business the Mackay Ports Limited’s policy is to provide efficient and cost effective port services in an ecologically sustainable manner with a high standard of environmental performance. The key to achieving this is to ensure that needs of the community and the values attached to natural and physical resources are taken into account in corporate planning and the way in which business is conducted. The Mackay Ports Limited’s vision is ‘to be recognised as creative, dynamic and value driven’ and mission is ‘to be the infrastructure and logistics provider of choice focused on the future needs of the region and state’.

The Mackay Ports Limited’s statement of corporate intent and corporate plan has identified amongst its core values certain principles specifically relevant to the Authority’s environmental performance; these include:

  • The Environment – to exhibit environmental stewardship through our actions.
  • Governance – to act professionally in upholding our legal and statutory obligations and being ethical in all our dealings.”

In part achievement of the stated vision and mission outcomes the Authority has identified and committed to key strategies, including; “Environment: to lead change by integrating environmental considerations into all aspects of our strategic planning, business decision making and operations”. This will ensure that environmental management is an integral part of the Authority’s operations. Further specific policy commitments adopted by the Authority to achieve the vision and mission outcomes are:

  1. To implement and maintain a structured Environmental Management System consistent with ISO 14001, which is regularly reviewed to ensure it remains relevant to all aspects of our operations.
  2. To utilise the adopted Environmental Management System as a tool for continual improvement in environmental performance and pollution prevention, through setting objectives and targets and assessing performance against these.
  3. To ensure that our employees are aware at all times of their environmental duties and are provided with suitable training and resources to enable effective day to day environmental management. Employees will be encouraged to identify and act upon opportunities to minimise any adverse environmental impacts and issues.
  4. To maintain pro-active involvement in community affairs relating to the environmental performance of our operations.
  5. Adherence to all other relevant Queensland and Commonwealth environmental legislation, and associated standards and codes of practice.
  6. Expect our suppliers and contractors to meet the same high environmental standards that we impose on ourselves.
